Sambhaji Maharaj vs the Portuguese: The 1683 War on Goa
In 1683, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj went to war with the Portuguese in Goa after they sided with the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb against the Maratha state. When the Portuguese viceroy besieged the Maratha fort at Ponda, Sambhaji Maharaj broke the siege and pushed deep into Portuguese territory, coming close to taking Goa itself before Mughal forces arrived and he withdrew.
This documentary covers why the Portuguese-Mughal alliance was seen as a betrayal, the siege of Ponda Fort, the Maratha attacks on Portuguese strongholds, and how the Goa Inquisition shaped the conflict.
